EuroSDR Workshop "Beyond GNSS: resilient positioning and aerial mapping"
Organizers: Krzysztof Bakuła, Anna Bober, Fabio Remondino
in collaboration with Eija Honkavaara and Ivar Oveland
The efficiency and performance of photogrammetric- and LiDAR-based aerial mapping missions are nowadays fundamentally dependent on reliable positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) data, primarily derived from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). But the integrity of GNSS-dependent mapping operations faces unprecedented challenges from intentional signal interference, such as jamming (denial-of-service) and spoofing (deception). Therefore, the increasing dependence on GNSS-enabled aerial platforms introduces critical vulnerabilities due to such interferences, which can compromise positioning accuracy and navigation safety, and consequently, lead to problems in the derived geospatial data.
This EuroSDR workshop - organised in collaboration with EuroSDR Commission I and Commission II - wants to raise awareness and discuss the growing threat landscape of GNSS jamming and spoofing attacks on airborne photogrammetric and LiDAR mapping systems, examining their impact on geospatial data quality, operational safety, and mission reliability.
The workshop will run from 10:00 to 13:00 and will cover experiences and solutions from NMCAs, academia, and industry.
Through theory and case studies, the workshop examines how GNSS interference propagates through the mapping pipeline, from direct georeferencing failures to errors in photogrammetric bundle adjustment and LiDAR strip alignment. The ultimate goal is to share with participants the knowledge to design and implement resilient 3D aerial mapping missions capable of maintaining high positional accuracy and data quality even when operating in contested or GNSS-denied environments.
