EuroSDR Announces Joint Winners of the 2025 PhD Award

EuroSDR is delighted to announce the joint winners of the 2025 EuroSDR PhD Award, selected from a highly competitive pool of 11 outstanding submissions. After a rigorous evaluation by six independent experts, two exceptional theses were chosen for their scientific excellence, relevance to national mapping authorities, and quality of presentation.

The 2025 EuroSDR PhD Award Winners:

Dr Kyriaki Mouzakidou
Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
Thesis Title: Concurrent Adjustment of Active and Passive Optical Sensors with GNSS and Raw Inertial Data
Kyriaki’s research introduces a unified optimization workflow that integrates navigation and optical data, leveraging a novel image-to-lidar spatial constraint to significantly enhance the geo-referencing accuracy of 3D models.

Dr Weixiao Gao
Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)
Thesis Title: Semantic Understanding of Urban Scenes from Textured Meshes
Weixiao’s work advances the semantic interpretation of urban environments using textured 3D meshes, contributing valuable insights for urban planning and geospatial analysis.

Both winners will present their research at the 147th EuroSDR Board of Delegates Meeting in Zagreb, Croatia, on Thursday, 13 November 2025. Each will receive a €500 award and travel reimbursement.
