Description
On 22 and 23 January 2025 IGN, France (Paris) will host a EuroSDR workshop on the state-of-the-art of 3D mapping at regional and national mapping agencies and other governmental institutions, as well as on the related open research issues.
Since 2013, European National and Regional Mapping Agencies have joined forces in the EuroSDR 3D Special Interest Group to exchange knowledge and developments on 3D national mapping and to collaborate on topics that are of mutual interest. For this purpose we regularly organise workshops discussing recent developments in our organisations and publish papers on the outcomes.
The group started originally to explore how 2D national mapping could be extended into 3D, addressing questions such as “Why do we need 3D?” and “How do we get it” (e.g. directly measure it or extrude 2D models with the support of a DSM). Since then, 3D national mapping has gone through major developments and in many countries the availability and use of 3D topographical data is common practice.
Nowadays, NMCAs produce and provide 3D data products to support decision making for societal and global issues. Consequently, apart from technical challenges, they face questions such as on how to define and interact with Digital Twins and how to interact with non-geodata (climate, mobility, etc.)
During the workshop NMCAs will present their approaches of producing 3D data products, examples of uses of their 3D data and plans for the future. They will also present the challenges they face both technically and operationally (e.g. how can NMCAs serve users’ needs as well as societal and global challenges with their 3D data products in a feasible, cost-effective manner?).
Location
The workshop will be hosted by IGN, France (St Mandé, Paris).
Programme schedule
We will start on Wednesday 22 January 14:00 and finish Thursday 23rd of January at noon to accommodate travel for participants most optimally. Apart from NMCAs presentations, there will be discussions to identify open research areas.
Participation
Participation is open for everyone who is interested in 3D developments at National Mapping Agencies and who would like to contribute to defining open research questions.
Call for presentations
We invite NMCAs to present their ongoing 3D developments whether they are advanced or initial explorations. Please contact jantien.stoter@kadaster.nl if you are interested in giving such a presentation or if you have any questions.
