Joint EUREF and EuroSDR Workshop on How To Increase Use of Spatial Data & Sharing Data Across Borders - Relating to Reference Frames

22 - 23 October 2024 (Tromsø, Norway)

Tuesday 22nd October - 09:00 to Wednesday 23rd October - 11:30

Join this co-organised workshop between EuroSDR (Commission 2) and Euref in an arctic atmosphere under the northern lights to discuss how best to simplify usages of geospatial data in relation to reference frames and geospatial infrastructure. The main goal is to simplify the usage of geospatial data, deal with multiple EPSG codes at a national level, and handle datasets that straddle international borders.

The question of whether the geodesy sector together with the National Mapping Agencies holds the responsibility to simplify the usage of positions and coordinates across Europe will be explored. It’s vital to sidestep national and local reference frame variants in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. Instead, the emphasis should be on ensuring that even those without geodetic expertise can seamlessly utilize geographic data, maps, and positions from diverse sources especially in locations close to or covering both sides of national borders. We see a network of European collaboration as the cornerstone to begin to effectively tackle these challenges.

The FRAM Centre High North Research Centre for Climate, Tromsø is in the centre of the northern lights’ oval, which means you can see the Aurora Borealis even when the activity is low. Experiencing the northern lights is something you will remember for the rest of your life, so can participating at this groundbreaking workshop.

Overall Workshop Goals:

Easy sharing of geospatial data without the need of user interactions, in relation to reference frame (also cross border).

Reduce the risk of EPSG confusion or misunderstanding.

Contribution to strengthening the international collaboration of geodesy in Europe

Investigate how to handle reference frames and time in data management and spatial data infrastructure.

Increase and simplify user interaction in terms of reference frames to avoid uncertainty and errors.

The Workshop will give presentations on topics related to data sharing and storage in relation to national mapping agencies together with a deep dive into topics such as datums and reference frames. This will be combined with breakout sessions to discuss further solutions to simplify usage of geospatial information and reference frames for the non-specialist user.
